Gikonyo Mwangi
Meet Gikonyo Mwangi with such an inspirational testimonial!
“From one of the humblest backgrounds, being a young man with nothing but a dream, I fell I in the mercies of a church that fundraised towards my college education.
Despite these financial challenges, I joined AIHT and became a class rep, gaining valuable leadership experience. However, paying school fees became increasingly difficult, leaving me unable to stay in the hostels or have regular meals. In my desperation, I mustered the courage to approach CEO Madam Rose Kibe, known for her strictness. To my surprise, she showed me a motherly heart and listened to my plight. Madam Rose paid my rent for three months, provided me with shopping money, and encouraged me to return to the hostels. From that moment on, I never missed a class or meal due to financial constraints. I am forever grateful to her kindness and support. With a determined mindset, I made a promise to myself not to fail Madam Rose, vowing to excel in everything I pursued.
After completing my hospitality management course, I graduated in March 2018. The Head of the Hospitality Department promptly referred me to a job, marking the beginning of my career. I had the privilege of gaining experience across various roles in the hotel industry, from the kitchen to front office and food and beverage sales and service. I was driven to be the best, not just for myself, but also for those who believed in me. In 2019, I seized an opportunity to work with the Sarova Group of Hotels as a food and beverage sales and service personnel, which further shaped my career. Within three months, I received a merit of excellence from the HR department. I continued to work, learn, and gain experience until the Covid pandemic interrupted my journey. In January 2021, I received a job offer as a supervisor in F&B at Izaack Walton Inn in Embu. Shortly after, I was promoted to the position of F&B manager, where I worked until June 2022. Following that, I relocated to Naivasha to become the manager at Leiyan Grills and Lounge. Throughout my journey, I have also ventured into personal business ventures and pursued roles as an event organizer and emcee. Currently, I hold the position of Marketing Manager at KV2 Safaris Africa.”
Maina Joseph Kathae
Meet Head Chef, JA Cafe Westland, Maina Joseph Kathae!
“I joined Amboseli Institute of Hospitality and Technology in 2018 to pursue a diploma in hospitality management. I chose this course because it is versatile, it is my passion, I wanted to explore my spirit of service, and I wanted to understand the different cultures.
My student life in Amboseli was interesting since it had its own challenges that molded me to who I am today. The teachers were determined with full attendance in class and ensured students did what was required and in the right way. For my first internship, I went to Cold Springs Hotel for 6 months, where I got to polish up my kitchen skills on all sections. For my second internship, I went to Crown Plaza in JKIA for 4 months. Here, I got to acquire the hands-on skills for the service department.
Currently, I am the head chef at JA Cafe in Westland. Amboseli contributed to my resilience and a good foundation for my career.”
Anthony Ngigi
Meet our very own Anthony Ngigi Chege from our Class 02/08!! Here’s his inspirational story, He is currently a Resident Manager at a well-known establishment in Kenya!
Hospitality Management was my course of choice. The dream was birthed when I was in high school, so when I joined AIHT, student life experience was quite exciting. Amboseli Institute fit the bill well. A positive attitude helped me grasp a lot from theory and practical sessions offered by the professional tutors. Winning the Mr. Integrity (a character contest) was the most incredible memory. This exposed me, created a network, and assisted me in developing the abilities that have shaped who I am today. The directors, Madam Jennifer Kago Koome and Madam Hellen Kibe, must be mentioned; their advice and mentorship goes above and beyond.
An added advantage is that the Institute guarantees internships in reputable establishments. I took a unique approach to every internship I had. I’ve always thought of an internship as a job interview, and if I presented myself as a diligent, ambitious, and eager intern, they might consider me as a potential employee in the future. I would therefore pursue the internship with vigor and make a lasting impression. My second internship took place to be at Sarova Mara, where I was eventually hired. My first internship was at NERSVAIR at JKIA, formerly the NAS.
Course progression and graduation took a hospitality management course that was accredited to Moi University. I therefore graduated from Amboseli Institute 2011 and pursued a Bachelor’s degree at Moi University where later I graduated.
Career path & growth my Mantra-discipline, hard work and ready to learn. This has propelled me from being an intern, go through the ranks to a Resident Manager. This goes way back to the character built at Amboseli Institute.
Grateful for the Journey that began from Amboseli Institute.
